How Screen Time Affects Children ’ s Vision
Screens are everywhere — from tablets to smartboards — and kids are using them earlier than ever. At Maine Optometry, we often talk with parents about the effects of screen time on young eyes.
Digital Strain Is Real
Extended screen time can lead to digital eye strain, which includes symptoms like:
- Headaches
- Tired or dry eyes
- Squinting
- Difficulty focusing
It may also contribute to early onset myopia (nearsightedness), which has been rising dramatically in recent years.
Signs to Watch For
Children may not always speak up when something feels off. Keep an eye out for:
- Sitting too close to screens
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Tilting their head or covering one eye
- Complaining of headaches
Prevention Tips for Parents
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Encourage outdoor play — it’s good for eye health!
- Limit recreational screen use when possible.
Annual eye exams help us catch these changes early and provide personalized advice.
