Specialty Contact Lenses at Maine Optometry
No matter what your eyes or vision require, at Maine Optometry, we’re here to help you. We prioritize the needs of our patients by offering a large selection of specialty contact lenses that will give you crisp vision without needing to rely on eyeglasses.
What Are Specialty Lenses?
Everyone’s eyes are different, and some patients may have found that they can’t comfortably wear standard contact lenses. That’s why Maine Optometry carries a wide range of specialty contact lenses that allow all our patients to enjoy comfortable, clear vision. Specialty lenses are ideal for helping patients who have keratoconus, a sensitivity to oxygen flow, or want to reduce their reliance on reading glasses.
Why Specialty Contact Lenses Are Important
If you have an eye condition that makes wearing traditional spherical contact lenses uncomfortable or even impossible to wear, specialty lenses are likely a great solution for you! These lenses allow patients to enjoy the freedom of contact lenses, but in a comfortable way designed with their eyes in mind.
Specialty Lens Options
Maine Optometry is proud to provide a large range of specialty lens options for your various needs. Our specialty lens eye doctors can identify which kind will work best for you during a contact lens eye exam.
Scleral
These lenses are larger than traditional contact lenses and are designed to rest on the white of your eyes, known as the sclera. This makes scleral lenses an excellent option for those with sensitive corneas. They’re also ideal for patients with dry eye disease as their reservoir design provides extra hydration and oxygenation to the eye.
Rigid Gas Permeable
Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are contact lenses that have a firm and durable design that allows more oxygen to pass through into the front of the eye than traditional contact lenses would. These lenses are a great choice for people who find standard contact lenses to be uncomfortable, and they often offer superior visual acuity.
Multifocal
Typical single-focus lenses are designed to help the wearer see clearly at one specific distance, but multifocal lenses give patients the opportunity to see clearly at multiple fields of distances without needing to rely on other eyewear.
Hybrid
Hybrid lenses combine the comfortability and flexibility of standard contact lenses and the improved visual acuity of RGP lenses. These specialty contact lenses are also an excellent choice for correcting severe astigmatism.
Toric
Toric lenses are a specialty lens variation that can correct astigmatism. These lenses have a shape that looks like a doughnut sliced in half, instead of the traditional spherical shape of standard lenses.

Lenses for Myopia Management
Glasses can correct vision affected by myopia (nearsightedness), but they won’t address the underlying issues, which can cause health issues later in life for younger patients as their myopia progresses. We offer Ortho-K overnight lenses for myopia management that gently reshape the eye overnight, providing clearer vision during the day.
